Acne scarring can be one of the toughest skin concerns to get rid of. At Cope Cosmetic Dermatology, we offer a variety of the most effective ways to get rid of acne scarring for clear, smooth skin.
What Is Acne Scarring?
Acne scarring is the result of acne, a minor infection of the skin. There are many different types of acne scarring but one common factor is that it can be very difficult to get rid of. Acne scarring can take many different forms, from raised bumps to small holes in the skin. It can also be pigmented or the same color as the surrounding skin.
Types of Acne Scarring
Atrophic Scars
Atrophic scars are scars that leave behind small depressions in the skin’s surface. One form of severe atrophic scarring is called ice pick scars which are very narrow and deep.
Hypertrophic Scars
Hypertrophic acne scars are scars that are raised above the surface of the skin. They are sometimes pigmented and can be pinkish or brownish, making them more visible.
Keloid Scars
Keloid scars are a type of hypertrophic scar but are specifically caused by the overgrowth of collagen. They’re typically much larger than the wound itself and can form from very minor skin lesions like acne. Some people are predisposed to getting keloid scars.
What Causes Acne Scars?
Acne is an infection in the pores of the skin. When this infection occurs, the skin swells and causes damage to the walls of the pores. Once the infection subsides, the skin rapidly creates new collagen to heal the wound – sometimes, too much collagen is produced, and other times too little. The result is a raised or hollow bump in the skin, sometimes called acne scarring.
