It can be frustrating to be constantly worried about unwanted hair growth. At Cope Cosmetic Dermatology, we offer permanent hair removal so you can feel confident in any situation.

What is Unwanted Hair Removal?

Hair naturally grows in most areas of the human body, but it’s normal to dislike hair growth in certain areas. Both men and women spend a large amount of time on hair removal by shaving, plucking, waxing, or epilating. Fortunately, there are permanent ways to remove hair and reduce the frequency of its growth.

Unwanted Hair Areas

There are many common areas where people regularly try to remove unwanted hair. These include:

  • Face
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Shoulders
  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Bikini area

What Causes Hair Growth?

Hair growth occurs in stages. It grows from the root of the follicles in your skin where blood supplies oxygen and nutrients. Eventually, the hair shaft emerges past the skin. Once the hair shaft reaches the end of its life, it falls out of the follicle and a new shaft begins growing. When removing hair at home, the shaft is either cut off or pulled out at the root. Permanent hair removal, however, interrupts this hair growth mechanism and prevents it from happening altogether.

What Are My Treatment Options for Unwanted Hair?

Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways to reduce hair growth and activity. IPL, or intense pulsed light, is a laser light platform most commonly used for laser hair removal – however, there are a variety of options available. It works by administering light energy which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft. It then travels to the follicle where it generates heat and damages the hair growth mechanisms in the root. Over time and with multiple treatments, this can drastically reduce growth in the treatment area.

Maintaining Healthy Skin with Laser Hair Removal

The most important step after laser hair removal is keeping your skin protected from sun exposure. Laser hair removal can make your skin photosensitive so make sure to wear SPF 30+ daily and avoid sunlight during the middle part of the day. It can take several treatment sessions to fully treat your area because of the hair growth cycle, and you may still need to remove hair at home during this time – but, with a full package of treatments, you’ll notice much less hair growth and far easier hair removal.
