What Is Cryosurgery?
Cryosurgery, or cryotherapy, is an in-office procedure designed to quickly and completely remove skin growths using extremely cold temperatures. This process causes the treated skin cells to die and fall off without impacting the surrounding healthy skin. It’s a much quicker and less invasive way to remove skin growths than surgical removal.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Cryosurgery?
Cryosurgery has a wide variety of uses. It’s best for patients who have skin growths like:
- Benign Skin Growths
- Precancers
These kinds of growths are not necessarily cancerous yet but should still be removed. Additionally, cryosurgery can remove them for cosmetic reasons.
What Can I Expect From Cryosurgery?
Cryosurgery can be performed right in our office. To begin, you’ll be given a topical anesthetic so you’re comfortable. Then, the area will be cleansed and sterilized. A specialized pen or cryoprobe is applied to the area (or a small amount of liquid nitrogen using a cotton swab). Finally, you’ll be given aftercare instructions to follow at home.
Cryosurgery Aftercare
It’s extremely important to keep your treatment area clean and free of infection after your procedure. Our team will make sure you understand the right way to cleanse and dress the wound, as well as supply bandages as needed. You’ll follow up with our team to ensure your skin is healing correctly and that the whole growth has been sufficiently treated. It’s possible to require another treatment session if the growth comes back or wasn’t completely removed. If so, our team will help you understand the right time to return for another treatment.
