Some skin growths require the expertise of a surgical dermatologist. At Cope Cosmetic Dermatology, our team can provide safe and effective surgical removal for a variety of skin growths and needs.
What is Surgical Removal?
Skin growths sometimes require surgical removal, whether for medical or cosmetic reasons. A surgical dermatologist can remove skin growths with an in-office procedure for healthy, clear skin. The biggest benefit of consulting a surgical dermatologist for your removal is that they can take steps to minimize scarring if your skin growth is in a visible area.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Surgical Removal?
Surgical removal is sometimes recommended for the following conditions:
- Benign Skin Growths
- Precancers
There are many different ways to get rid of skin growths, but surgical removal is sometimes necessary when your skin growth requires an expert technique or stitching. In other cases, your surgical dermatologist may need to also perform a biopsy or ensure that all of the growth tissue is removed.
What Can I Expect From Surgical Removal?
Our team can perform surgical removals right in our office. To begin, you’ll be given a topical anesthetic and the area will be cleansed and sterilized. Then, the area will be surgically removed and made ready for a short recovery.
Surgical Removal Aftercare
After your procedure, it’s important to keep the area clean and bandaged. Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions and ensure you know when to follow up and return for any stitch removal. Your dermatologist will take steps to minimize scarring but it can be helpful to follow these steps:
- Keep the area covered and moist with Vaseline
- Apply silicone scar gel once the wound is fully healed
- Use SPF 30+ sunscreen daily on the area
If you still have visible scarring after your recovery, our team can help you explore cosmetic treatments to reduce its appearance.
